Pines
Other conifers
- Colorado Blue spruce--Picea pungens 'Glauca'
- Colorado Green spruce--Picea pungens
- Both blue and green spruce grow 1 foot a year.
They like plenty of water, and are good in or near lawns.
Spruces are good in a large planter such as an oak barrel for several years.
- Dwarf Alberta spruce--Picea glauca conica
- Grows very slowly...about 3" a year. Prefers regular watering, soil enriched with organic material, and shade from the hottest afternoon sun. Can be grown for many years as a miniature Christmas tree.
[Note: we can no longer import pines from Oregon, where our primary stock has always come from, due to a quarantine for the Pine Shoot Tip Moth. We regret that we will not have any pines as living Christmas trees.]
- Austrian pine--Pinus nigra
- Grows 3 feet a year.
Drought tolerant. Good in a large planter for a few years.
- Scotch pine--Pinus sylvestris
- Grows 2 feet to 3 feet a year.
Drought tolerant. Good in a large planter for a few years.
- Deodar cedar--Cedrus deodara
- Grows fast: about 5 feet a year. Very drought tolerant once established. Graceful, semi-weeping habit.
- Coast redwood--Sequoia sempervirens
- Grows fast: about 5 feet a year.
Likes plenty of water.
Good in or near lawns.
- Junipers--Juniperus scopulorum 'Gray Gleam', 'Skyrocket', 'Wichita Blue'
- Grow about 2'/year. Tight, columnar growth habit. Silvery blue foliage. Very drought tolerant once established.
How about something completely different?
Rosemary!
- Upright growing forms, sheared into a compact little Christmas tree...great for cooking, fragrance, and blue winter flowers!
- Holly!
Variegated English holly has great looking foliage and a nice Christmas tree shape...an excellent landscape plant for partial shade!
